CRRT is the short form for continuous renal replacement therapy. It is also called CBP, namely continue blood purification. It is a kind of continuous blood purification therapy for damaged kidney which has to last for 24 hours or near 24 hours per day.
In 1995, on the first International CRRT Academia Conference in San Diego, USA, CRRT was defined as all kinds of blood purification technology that can eliminate solute as well as support organ function. During the Second World War, scientists in Canada researched out the first artificial kidney machine which was first used to treat renal failure in 1946. Since then, the technology of blood purification developed very fast. Blood purification means using purification machine outside of body to filtrate pathogenic factor out in order to achieve the goal of treating the disease. It mainly includes blood dialysis, blood filtration, hemodiafiltration, blood perfusion, plasma exchange as well as Immunoadsorption and peritoneal dialysis, etc. Presently, blood purification therapy is not only used to treat acute or chronic renal failure, but also widely used to save patients who are in critical illness condition.
The clinical purpose of applying CRRT is aiming to eliminate excessive water, metabolic waste and toxin as well as adjust electrolyte disorder and support enough nutrition, which is beneficial to recover kidney function and remove kinds of inflammatory factors. Normally, CRRT is mainly used to treat acute or chronic renal failure complicated by cardiovascular function disorder, hypermetabolism or encephaledema. Besides, it can also be used to treat MODS (multiple organ dysfunction syndrome), ARDS (Acute respiratory distress syndrome), crush syndrome, ANP (acute necrotizing pancreatitis), chronic heart failure, hepatic encephalopathy as well as drug poisoning and toxin poisoning, etc.
